Abstract: The difference of democratic conception and the complexity of the actual political system have caused uncertainty in the relationship between democratic conception and political legitimacy. Based on the person-context interaction theories, the influence of democratic conception on trust in political institutions may vary depending on the development patterns and processes in different countries around the world. By using the hierarchical linear model(HLM) to study the data of the sixth wave of the world values survey (WVS) from 2010 to 2014, it is found that trust in political institutions is not only affected by individual democratic conception, but also related to such macro factors as the state of national(regional) development. More importantly, the influence of individual democratic conception on the trust in political institutions is moderated by the national(regional) development status.

Key words: democratic conception; political institutional trust; the state of national (regional) development; hierarchical linear model
