Abstract: The subsidiary's innovation ability has an important impact on the survival and development of a business group, but there are still insufficiencies in the discussion of its predecessors in the current research. Based on the existing literature, subsidiary's autonomy is divided into strategic autonomy and operational autonomy, and the relationship between the two types of autonomy, technological innovation performance and technology transfer performance is explored. The empirical findings show that the subsidiary's strategic autonomy has an inverted U-shaped relationship with technological innovation performance, which is significantly negatively correlated with technology transfer performance, while its operational autonomy is significantly positively correlated with technological innovation performance and technology transfer performance. Therefore, it suggests that the business group should maintain a moderate degree of strategic centralization and give the subsidiary full autonomy in its operations to promote the long-term development of the subsidiary.

Key words: business group;operational autonomy; strategic autonomy; technological innovation performance; technology transfer performance
