On the Evolution of Confucian Family Ethics in Chinese American Literature A Case Study of The Bonesetters Daughter by Amy Tan

Abstract: Based on a corpusbased study of The Bonesetters Daughter by Amy Tan, the frequency of “family” and words related to “family” is firstly counted in order to explore the family complex and the evolution of Confucian family ethics in Chinese American literature. Secondly, both the essences and dregs of Chinese Confucian family ethics are discussed from Amy Tans dual cultural perspectives of the Chinese and the American. Finally, Yuyingtang, a family Utopia is created in The Bonesetters Daughter by which Amy Tans ideal SinoAmerican family ethics is successfully formulated.
