Abstract: In the perspective of history of concepts, the origin and connotations of philosophy of information (PI) as well as the evolution of PI paradigms are characterized by the dual dimensions of diachronicity and synchronicity. By considering these two complementary questions: “which kind of information does the philosophy in PI belong to?” and “what kind of philosophy is PI?”, the connotations of PI and the dual paradigms of PI studies are explored, which highlight the modern appeal and intercultural significance of PI. The divergence and confluence of PI paradigms might provide a possible solution to a coherent but not unitive PI paradigm.

Key words: philosophy of information (PI), information, paradigm, history of concepts
