Abstract: Disorderly participation will reduce efficiency in space production, increase individual inequality and social stratification in the process of rapid urbanization. Aiming to explore the reasons for the decrease of public participation willingness and behaviors, a theoretical framework is constructed with the concept that “spatial capital and social capital can affect public participation through behavioral attitudes”. Based on Chinese Social Survey (CSS) 2017, how “individual and market economic conditions, population density, land resources” at the spatial level and “social trust” at the social level could affect “institutionalized, confrontational, and consultative” participation through individuals' attitudes is systematically examined. It is found that raising land resources retention, increasing individual income, and enhancing social trust can bring institutional participation behaviors. Reduced income and lower social trust can lead to confrontational participation. Consultative participation is positively related to land resources and population density, and negatively related to social trust. Meanwhile, behavioral attitude mediates spatial capital and social capital with public participation.
