Abstract: The prominent effect of Zr on Al and Al-based alloys is briefly introduced. The process scheme of manufacturing Al-Zr master alloy by electrolysis of ZrO2 in cryolite-alumina melt cell is put forward. The feasibility of the scheme is analyzed thermodynamically, and the activity coefficient of Zr in Al-Zr master alloys has been calculated by Miedema's model. The results reveal that both Al and Zr can jointly be precipitated and the solubility of ZrO2 in molten cryolite is approximately up to 0.55% and the activity coefficient of Zr in Al-Zr master alloy near to 1 at 1223 K. In addition, the Al-Zr master alloy containing about 2wt% is available to get directly in cell.
