Digital Platform Capability, Strategic Flexibility and Firm Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role of Ambidextrous Innovation Strategy Orientation

Abstract:

Based on the dynamic resource-based theory, this study ​systematically examined how digital platform capabilities influence firm innovation performance, ​with specific focus on the mediating mechanism of strategic flexibility and the moderating role of ambidextrous innovation orientation. An empirical analysis was conducted on the results of 322 questionairs through multiple linear regression and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The findings reveal that both digital platform integration capability and digital platform reconfiguration capability demonstrate positive effects on firm innovation performance. Strategic flexibility partially mediates the relationships between digital platform integration capability and innovation performance, as well as between digital platform reconfiguration capability and innovation performance. While exploitative innovation orientation and exploratory innovation orientation each positively moderate the relationship between strategic flexibility and innovation performance, ambidextrous balance orientation exhibits an inverted U-shaped moderating effect on this relationship. Furthermore, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) identifies two distinct configurations of antecedent conditions that lead to enhanced firm innovation performance.
