Abstract: Incentive barrier is one of the most important factors that restrict knowledge alliances normal operation and performance improvement. This paper analyses the four periods of the life cycle of knowledge alliance—gestation period, construction period, runtime period and disintegration period, and then lists the content, objectives and characteristics of the four life cycle periods. The incentive barriers are revealed from four dimensions, that is, knowledge characteristics, knowledge subject, knowledge alliance structure and external environment. Based on the previous theoretical analyses, this study builds a theoretical framework of incentive barriers for knowledge alliance, and brings forth four propositions corresponding to the different life-cycle periods. Meanwhile, it suggests several mechanisms to weaken incentive barriers.

Key words: knowledge alliance, incentive barrier, life cycle, knowledge subject
