Abstract: An evaluation index system on slope stability using three levels and five indexes were established on the basis of the extension theory to study the effect of internal friction angle and cohesion on the slope stability. The quantitative relation between the shear strength and the safety factor was given. The results showed that the safety factor increases linearly with the increase of the internal friction angle and the cohesion, and the internal friction angle is more sensitive than the cohesion to the safety factor. Finally, the Xiaopanling slope in Liaoning Province was reinforced by bolt based on the principles of safety, economy and efficiency.

Key words: extension theory, shear strength, safety factor, analysis of stability, control of stability
