Abstract: Improving the quality of export products is the key to realizing high-quality economic development and building a strong trading nation. However, a large number of zombie enterprises trigger resource mismatch, and the impact of zombie enterprises on the quality of normal enterprises' export products has not yet been paid attention to. Accordingly, the impact of zombie enterprises on the quality of normal enterprises' export products is empirically examined using the micro data of Chinese listed enterprises from 2009 to 2015 as the sample. The results show that zombie enterprises have a significant negative impact on the quality of normal enterprises' export products, and the conclusion still holds true after a series of robustness and endogeneity tests. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the negative impact of zombie enterprises on the quality of enterprises' export products is more obvious in private enterprises, enterprises that do not receive government subsidies, and enterprises in the central and western regions. The mechanism test finds that the resource mismatch triggered by zombie enterprises reduces the labor productivity and R&D and innovation investment of normal enterprises, thus affecting the quality improvement of export products.

Key words: zombie enterprise; quality of export products; labor productivity; innovation investment
