Study on the Affective Basis of Western Identity Construction

Abstract: Western society is facing a crisis of identity. In addition to the diachronic considerations of identity generation, it is necessary to explore the synchronic construction factors of the extensiveness and intensity of current identity conflicts. By discussing the reasons for the change of identity, tracing the relationship between identity and emotions, analyzing the influence and functions of emotion on social identity construction and the ways of identity driving, it is pointed out that identity construction is a process that takes emotion as the premise, processing intermediary and presenting effect. Finally, the construction process is analyzed of the discourse conflicts of Western social identity caused by self-identity, other-identity and national identity driven by emotions.
